About Raqs Princeton
Raqs: Princeton Belly Dance Company was founded in 2000, after receiving inspiration from the belly dance classes taught at Dillon Gym by Kim Leary. Wanting to bring the rich history and beauty of belly dance to the Princeton community, the students in the class decided to form a troupe and debut at Princeton's Communiversity that year. Eager to continue performing, Raqs put on its first Spring show in the Wilson Black Box Theater in 2001—and sold out! Continuing on this success, we have held an annual spring show ever since.
As an established performance group on campus, we are a welcoming and tight-knit community of dancers from all over the world. Our troupe embraces many levels of experience, from pre-professionals to complete beginners, with the ultimate goal of body love and empowerment. Throughout the year, we focus on learning and choreographing belly dance in various styles—from folkloric to theatrical, with a range of influences from the Middle East to fusions including Latin dance, American Tribal, Caribbean, and more!
To join Raqs, you must audition in the fall. Rehearsals for the annual spring show are scheduled by the choreographers of each dance, and whole company practice sessions take place once a week. Weekly practices run from October until the spring show, and we practice for various guest performances throughout the year.
