Photographing Raqs: Exploring a new artistic challenge
Daily Princetonian, March 5, 2020
Two weeks ago, I got a frantic text from my beloved friend — her belly dancing group was in need of a photographer who could take some impromptu shots of their dress rehearsal the evening before opening night.

Review: Student production of “The Odyssey” bursts the orange bubble
Daily Princetonian, March 29, 2019
Juggling, belly dancing, stepping, saxophone playing, and puppetry all came together at the Berlind Theatre this past weekend in a lively production of “The Odyssey” — a musical adaptation of Homer’s famous epic poem. The production, Victoria Davidjohn ’19 and Annabel Barry’s ’19 theater thesis, completed a four-show run with sold-out performances and over 40 Princeton students sharing the stage.

“No Experience Required:” Auditioning for Raks Odalisque
Daily Princetonian, September 30, 2015
The last time I was in a formal dance studio was before I turned 13. It was my 10th and final year of dance lessons when I inevitably shifted into the musical world, playing bassoon in the pit orchestra with dancers onstage. Still, I like to think that I have a basic knowledge of dance. However, as I walked into the dance studio of Dillon Gymnasium, I reminded myself that belly dancing is very different from ballet.

'Arabian Nights' ambitious, but flawed
Daily Princetonian, March 27, 2013
Under the artistic direction of Lili Driggs ’14, Raks Odalisque’s “Arabian Nights” packs a lot of different pieces into a show with a run time well under two hours. Beyond the vibrant costumes and impressive sword and pot-balancing tricks, “Arabian Nights” offers more creative and conceptual pieces that help diversify the program. While some of these artistic endeavors are better executed than others, you can expect an entertaining show supported by comical fillers — all you bros out there, make sure to practice your body rolls and hip isolations before the show — and committed dancers.

In ‘Mystique,’ the women of Raks shimmy to exotic new territories
Daily Princetonian, April 6, 2011
The lights go up on stage in the Frist Film/Performance Theatre on the dancers of Raks Odalisque, finger cymbals clinking and hips swaying in perfect time. In the last year, Princeton’s belly dancing company has improved in both technique and choreographic prowess, and it’s the dancers’ amazing synchrony that displays this improvement best.
